How to Rescue a Stray or Lost Dog with Live Humane Animal Cage Traps

If you're a dog lover, nothing is more heartbreaking than seeing a stray dog on the street. Fortunately, there are ways to rescue these dogs using humane animal traps. Animal rescue groups do all they can with animal traps, but citizens can help too when there is a need.

In this blog post, we'll go over how to bait and set up the trap and what to do if you catch a stray or lost dog.

Animal Cage Trap for Large Dogs

A live humane animal cage trap is the most common trap used to rescue stray dogs. These traps are large enough for a dog to enter and have a door triggered by weight. The door will close once the animal steps on the trigger plate and ensures that the animal cannot be harmed.

The cage you want to use is X-Large and measures approximately 58" x 26" x 17" inches. The LifeSupplyUSA trap features a gravity-action door, and two carrying handles to avoid contact with the dog. They are very durable and long-lasting, resistant to corrosion and rust.

Baiting the Trap

The most common way to bait these types of traps is with food. You can use:

  • hot dogs
  • lunch meats
  • canned food

Dogs are intrigued by strong scents, but unfortunately, keep in mind that other animals sometimes have a chance to get to it.

Place the bait in the back of the cage, so the animal has to step all the way in to get it.

Once you have baited the trap, find a proper location to set it up. It's essential to ensure that there are no obstacles around the trap that could block the door from closing. You also want to ensure that the trap is placed in an area with some shelter from the elements. If it's too hot or cold, the animal may not be attracted to the bait.

It's best to set the trap up at night since most strays are more active then. Check the trap every few hours to see if any animals are inside.

Rescuing Stray Dogs with Humane Cage Traps

  • Make sure the trap you're using is big enough. The last thing you want to do is trap a dog in a space that's too small and cause it further distress.
  • Check the trap regularly. You don't want an animal stuck in the trap for hours without food or water.
  • Be careful when handling the trap. If an animal is trapped, it will be scared and may try to bite. Wear gloves and use caution when opening the door to the cage.

Dog Behaviors & Illnesses

  • When approaching a stray dog, always do so with caution. They may be scared and lash out. If the dog is aggressive, it's best to call animal control.
  • Be aware of common illnesses that dogs can contract from being on the streets. These include parvovirus, distemper, and mange- not to mention usually fleas.
If you're uncomfortable handling a sick animal, it's best to call animal control.

    After Animal Rescue

Once you capture the stray dog, it's critical to know that you can't just do whatever you want with him. What if he's not a stray dog? Even if he has no collar, the dog could still have a microchip identifying the owner. The United States has different laws about handling stray dogs.

If you are rescuing a dog, you must report that you found the dog to a local humane society, animal shelter, or veterinarian. Some states require microchip scanning, and many have different "holding periods" for stray animals. When you surrender a rescued dog, it may be required to be sheltered for up to a week to be claimed by the owner. The main problem with outright keeping the dog is that it could already belong to someone.

    Proceed With Caution

If you follow these steps, you'll be able to successfully rescue a stray dog using a live humane animal trap! Again, each state has different laws so be sure to check with your local humane society and they could give you the best advice. Just remember to use caution and common sense, and always put the animal's safety first.
